Hotel Santa Catalina: the city's grand address since 1890

Hotel Santa Catalina opened in January 1890, designed by Scottish architect James M. MacLaren, and is still the oldest continuously operating hotel in the Canary Islands. The city council of Las Palmas took over the building after the First World War, and in 1951 a new building designed by Gran Canarian architect Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre gave the hotel the British colonial style it is still known for today. In 2019, the Barceló Hotel Group reopened the fully restored hotel as "Santa Catalina, a Royal Hideaway Hotel". Its guest list reads like a who's who of the 20th century: Winston Churchill, Ava Gardner and Maria Callas all stayed here. The hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant, Poemas by the Padrón brothers, underlines its reputation as one of the most important hotels in the Canary Islands to this day.
