Gran Canaria is shaped like a small continent. Because of this, the weather can be quite different depending on where you are on the island. This page brings together today's beach weather for every coastal zone, from Las Canteras in Las Palmas to Maspalomas and Amadores in the south. How to Read the Beach Weather Table

Each beach has its own row with six simple figures:

• Sky: how much cloud is expected (clear, partly cloudy, or overcast)
• Wind: how strong the wind is at the coast (light, moderate, or strong)
• Waves: how rough the sea is (calm, moderate, or strong swell)
• Air temperature: the expected high for the day, in degrees Celsius
• Sea temperature: the water temperature at that beach, in degrees Celsius
• UV index: how strong the sun is, on a scale that usually runs up to 11

All figures are updated daily and come from official weather sources. Conditions can still change quickly, especially wind and cloud cover, so treat the table as a same-day guide rather than an exact forecast.

Why the Weather Is Not the Same Everywhere

Many weather services show Gran Canaria's temperature and wind using data from the airport. This is not always a fair picture of the beaches, because the airport sits in one of the windiest parts of the island. To get a realistic view of beach weather, it helps to look at the north and south coasts separately.

The north coast, including Las Canteras in Las Palmas, tends to have more cloud and cooler air, especially in the morning. Trade winds from the north-east often bring a layer of cloud that can stay until midday before clearing.

The south coast, including Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico, is usually sunnier and warmer. This area sits in the rain shadow of the island's central mountains, so cloud breaks up quickly and clear skies are common most of the year.

Water Temperature and Swimming Conditions

Sea temperature around Gran Canaria changes gradually through the year rather than day to day. It is coolest in spring, from around March to May, and warmest in autumn, from around September to November, once the Atlantic has had all summer to warm up. On most beaches, waves and currents are gentle enough for casual swimming, but a few spots, particularly on the north and west coasts, can have stronger currents and are better suited to experienced swimmers and surfers. Always check any flag system in place at the beach before you swim.

Best Time of Day for the Beach

On the north coast, mornings can start cloudy, with skies often clearing by late morning or early afternoon. On the south coast, mornings are usually clear from the start. Wind tends to pick up on most beaches from around midday onwards, so if you prefer calmer conditions for swimming, earlier in the day is usually a good choice.

Getting There / Transport Connections

Public buses (Guaguas Global) connect Las Palmas, the airport and the southern resorts, with regular services to Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés. If you are staying in the south and want to visit the north coast beaches (or the other way round), a rental car gives the most flexibility, since some smaller beaches on the north and west coasts have limited bus connections. Taxis and private airport transfers are also a comfortable option if you are travelling with beach gear or arriving straight from the airport.
