From Bank Headquarters to Design Hotel

The building was completed in 1960, designed by architect Claudio Martínez in a plain, functionalist style suited to its original purpose: the headquarters of Banco Exterior de España. The hotel still carries the bank's initials, BEX, in its name today. After the bank moved out, the building served for a time as the offices of the city bus company, Guaguas Municipales, before the Acosta Matos family converted it into a boutique hotel with an Art Deco design in 2018. The bank's old vault now houses the breakfast restaurant, Trésor. Heavy, vault-like doors lead into the guest rooms, and the lobby columns are shaped like stacks of coins — a design theme that runs through the whole building and gives it a distinctive character.

The Ibex Rooftop Bar sits in the heart of the financial district of Las Palmas, a short walk south of Parque Santa Catalina. Both Las Canteras beach and the main shopping street, Mesa y López, are within easy walking distance.

On the hotel's top floor, twelfth level, guests find an open terrace with a small pool, lounge sofas and sun loungers. The 360-degree view takes in the harbour, the city centre and the mountains beyond — on a clear day, a panorama that few other rooftops in the city can match.

The cocktail menu plays on the building's banking past, with drinks such as the "Wall Street Mule" and the "Broker Sour" nodding to its financial history. The list also includes wines, Champagne, beer, juices and classic cocktails such as sangria, with San Miguel available on tap.

Opening Hours and Dress Code

According to the Gran Canaria Tourist Board (Patronato de Turismo de Gran Canaria), the bar is open Wednesday to Saturday, 17:00 to midnight . The dress code is smart casual. The terrace has become a popular spot for an evening cocktail, and some sources mention occasional live music or DJ sets at weekends .
