Atlantic Center of Modern Art (CAAM)

Remarkable exhibitions of internationally known artists

Since its opening in 1989 the Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) has evolved into one of the island’s cultural and social centers. Behind the usually traditional and nondescript appearance of the museum (on the picture above the frontage has been redesigned for a graffiti exhibition), which was once a hotel, a quite modern interior with marble stairways and numerous architectural glass elements can be found.

The CAAM regularly organizes exhibitions and events – mainly of modern and experimental genres. Furthermore, the museum proudly displays its own collection of various Canary art objects from the 20th and 21st century.

The art center primarily intends to accentuate Canary Art by presenting its influence on African, American and European Art. The three continents’ emigrants to Gran Canaria have been tremendously influencing Canary Art which can thus be regarded as a mélange of the three continents’ art as well as a genre unique to the island.

The CAAM is also place of art courses, conferences and lectures on various topics in the field. This year the annual Las Palmas Film Festival will take place in the CAAM.
