Castillo del Romeral – hidden insiders’ tip at the east coast

Amazing waves, solitary beach, palm-trees and an idyllic estuary

The surf spot Castillo del Romeral is about two kilometers from the village with the same name. A bumpy gravel road leads from the sleepy fishermen’s village and its colorful harbor to the awesome surf spot in the south. Arriving at the beach, you won’t believe it. This place and its surroundings have a very particular and for Gran Canaria quite untypical flair. Many palm-trees surround the beach, a little further there is a goat farm which is soon noticed by its inhabitants’ noise.

The rocky beach is about two kilometers long and has a isolated atmosphere, although it is only few kilometers from the tourist places Playa Ingles and San Agustin. Right behind the beach numerous kinds of birds have found their home around a little lake which looks almost like a small oasis. A paradise for surfers and visitors which competes with the surf spot Playa de San Nicolas in the northwest of the island.

The spot is mostly frequented by the village’s youngsters, therefore foreign guests are welcomed by surprised looks. At most of the other spots in Las Palmas almost the half of all surfers is international.

On the pictures you can see that this idyllic place is quite calm and solitary – not because of its waves’ quality but as it is just well hidden. So, whoever looks for both a calm spot and great waves – will fall in love with Castillo del Romeral.

Getting there: We recommend using the country road GC 500 instead of the highway GC 1. You turn in direction of Castillo del Romeral and follow the gravel road for about two kilometers southbound. As soon as you find an idyllic landscape and amazing waves you have arrived.
