Beach Hotels, Holiday Apartments & Villas in Gran Canaria
The tough choice between beach vibes, mountain villages, city life — and all those different hosts
Gran Canaria has a place for every kind of traveler — from sunny beach resorts in the south to rustic fincas hidden in the island’s heart. Hotels usually win with comfort, reliable service, and prime locations, while apartments offer more space and freedom. But beware: Airbnbs aren’t always cheaper or more authentic, and “close to the beach” in listings can be misleading. If you’re after real island life, check out Las Palmas or countryside holiday homes. If nonstop sunshine is your goal, the south is where you’ll feel right at home.
Where to Stay in Las Palmas & Around Gran Canaria
Between Hotel Comfort and the Airbnb Illusion
If you’re heading to Gran Canaria, one big question always comes up sooner or later: hotel or holiday apartment? And where should you actually stay — in the capital Las Palmas, the sun-drenched south, or somewhere in between?
Las Palmas vs. the South (or the Island’s Interior): Two Different Worlds on One Island
Las Palmas City is the island’s urban soul — full of life, local markets, cafés, rooftop bars, and the famous Las Canteras beach, where you’ll find more locals than tourists. Staying here means experiencing the real Canarian lifestyle, though you’ll have to accept that the weather isn’t always as bright as down south.
The south of Gran Canaria — from Bahía Feliz through Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas all the way to Mogán — is a full-blown tourism machine: endless sunshine, golden beaches, huge resorts, shopping malls, and restaurants for every taste. You’ll get comfort and convenience, but the local charm? Not so much. Outside the hotel staff, you’ll rarely meet an actual Canarian.
