On steep gravel roads and highways to Las Palmas
ambitious terrain-downhill to the old town of Las Palmas
A more demanding tour on tracks, paths and highways: Our giuded tour starts on a short street segment at the viewpoint Mirador Pico de Las Nieves, but soon it goes on a gravel road which is not recommended for participants without any terrain experience. Far away from the paved roads we descend southerly through the Barranco del Agua in the endless serpentines to La Bodeguilla above the Vega de san Mateo. From there we ride on highways and tracks along a ridge uphill and downhill past to Santa Brigida and Tafira to the old town of Las Palmas. Highlights of the tour are the isolated, by car unattainable mountain slopes with the unique view over the old town of Las Palmas. Not suitable for cyclists who can only control paved roads. Also MTB-beginners should get off the bike in some sections of the tour.
Pico de las Nieves - La Bodeguilla - La Atalaya -Tafira
Downhill on adventurous Trails through the wild nature of the eastern part of the central massive
This mountainbike-tours strats afer a time and power saving ascent by bus up to the Pico de las Nieves, right next to the highest point of the island in a hight of 1949 meters. The first 3 kilometers lead fast and moderate on a country road downward to the junction on an also attractive trail down to La Bodeguilla. We ride with changing speed through forests, meadows and scrubs along the hilltops and hangs on the partially rough trail and repeatedly enjoy this for Gran Canaria unique, uninhabited landscape section.
In the middle section are repeatedly dificult parts, partially with rough scree, ruts and steeper sections. For uncertain this means to better get off and shove, for participants without any experience this rout is not suitable because with its malicious obstacles it often requires the highest concentration and experience.
Shortly before La Bodeguilla we rise on paved Streets up the long ridge, wich almost goes down into the city of Las Palmas. On some steep slopes also the fitness of the driver gets checked, repeadtedly alternate Trails and streets, during we see the in the valley located places San Mateo, Santa Brigida and Tarifa going by.
We still pass the villa suburbs La Atalaya, Tafira and ride on a ridge again, which ends right above the old town of Las Palmas, where we get the last unique view over the city. From there it goes past to the beautiful Plaza Cairasco to the bike path next to the marina, which leads us without any efforts back to our bike-station.
40 very varied kilometers are behind us, which once again showed another unknown aspect of the island of Gran Canaria. In- and outlooks which car-driver can never get and paths, which walker because of the length of the route can manage at best in sections.
